Dr Birch has a special interest in hand surgery and is an active member of the Australian Hand Surgery Society. Hand surgery encapsulates both elective and trauma surgeries. Electively Dr Birch commonly treats ganglions, carpal tunnel, trigger finger, dupuytren's and arthritis that affect the everyday function and appearance of the hand.

Daily, Dr Birch is heavily involved in the treatment and management of all hand trauma cases ranging from nailbed injuries through to major microsurgical cases for complete replantation of digits and limbs.
